Families

This is a great area to spend quality time with the family, from country strolls, visiting historical sites, country shows to great meals.  There is so much to see and do.

Here are just a few ideas, but please take time to find out what is going on locally and tell us about anything that you really enjoyed.

 

Danebury Iron Age Hill Fort, Stockbridge - just outside Stockbridge is the beautiful Danebury Hill Fort.  This is well worth a visit and is a stunning walk.

Mottisfont NT Abbey and Gardens, Mottisfont - Just 1.5 miles away is the lovely National Trust house and gardens of Mottisfont.  Set in a chocolate box village it's well worth a visit.  The rose garden is lovely and the river test runs through the grounds.  you can walk there and back if you want to.  Dogs welcome in the most of the grounds.

Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Romsey - The award wining Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is famous the world over. In 1977 Sir Harold left the Gardens under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council. It is now run as a charity under the remit of horticulture, conservation, education and recreation.  All set in 180 acres.

Leckford Water Gardens, Longstock - Stunning water gardens owned and managed by John Lewis.  Open 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, April to September, 2-5pm.  No Dogs.

Houghton Lodge Gardens, Houghton - Stunning location on the banks of the River Test.  Beautiful gardens to visit.  Tea shop of site and can be rented for weddings. Dogs welcome.  Open 1st April to 30th Sept, 10am to 5pm.

Exbury Gardens, Nr Beaulieu, New Forest - The Gardens are a spectacular 200 acre (80 hectare) site, world-famous for the Rothschild Collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and rare trees and shrubs. There is a miniature steam railway to enjoy.  Dogs welcome in most of the gardens.  Open end March to beginning of November (please check website).

Stonehenge, Wiltshire - Only 30 minutes away you can see one of the wonders of the world.  Stonehenge is well worth a visit, as is the surrounding area.

Old Sarum, Salisbury - Less than 30 minutes away you can uncover 2000 years of history at Old Sarum.

Fort Brockhurst, Portsmouth - Historic Fort Brockhurst built in 1850s to protect Portsmouth harbour from French invasion.  40 minutes away.

King John's House & Heritage Centre, Romsey - Museum spanning 750 years of history.

Tree Runners, Andover - Just outside Andover is tree runners (similar to go ape).

Everyman Cinema, Winchester - Lovely small cinema in an old church.  2 screens, comfy seats, bar and food. 

Beaulieu Motor Museum, Beaulieu - fantastic motor museum with much more.  Top gear world, a beautiful abbey, Beaulieu house and secret army museum.  A good day out for all age groups.  Beaulieu village is very beautiful. 

Bucklers Hard Maritime Museum, Nr Beaulieu - Beautiful maritime museum and the story of Bucklers hard boat builders.  Many of the cottages are museums.  Lovely on a sunny day.  Take a boat trip down the river and there is a lovely pub there to have lunch.  There is a stunning walk along the river from Bucklers hard to Beaulieu.

The New Forest National Park - The New Forest is so close that you can enjoy it whenever you like.  So much to see and do in the New Forest that there is too much to mention.  I have put a link so that you can take a look yourself.  Lovely for country walks, coastal walks and cosy pubs.  Lots of activities available.

Watercress line Steam Railway, Alresford - take a look at their website for special events for children and adults.

Museum of Army Flying, Wallops, Stockbridge - Local army flying museum for enthusiasts and families.

Sammy Miller Motorbike Museum, New Milton - Great museum for motorbike enthusiasts and families.

Solent Sky Museum, Southampton - Great museum for aviation enthusiasts and families.

Avebury Village and Stone Circle, Avebury - 45 minutes away, but worth a visit if you are visiting Stonehenge.  Amazing stone circle around the historic village of Avebury. 

Hurst Castle - Built by Henry VIII.  Beautiful walk along the sand spit to the castle.  Enjoy the castle and finding out about it's history and either walk back or take the boat, which is a lovely way to end your trip.

Lepe Country park and Beach - Lovely place to take a walk or to play on the beach.  Coffee shop, parking and picnic area. 

Hengistbury Head and Mudeford Spit Beach - Beautiful walks, information centre and great beach.  The beach is very safe and dog friendly.  Lovely place to spend the day and a good beach café to have lunch.

Paultons Park and Pepper pig world - Local theme park.

Space Centre, Alresford - fantastic interactive space centre museum.

Marwell Zoo - Zoo popular with all ages.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyards - A great day out for all ages.  Visit the Mary Rose museum, HMS Warrior and many more.

Hawks Conservancy Trust - Come and learn all about these amazing creatures.

Milestones Museum, Basingstoke - Good place to take children on a rainy day.

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson - Good museum near Portsmouth.

Stockbridge Riding School - This is a fantastic area to explore on horseback.  Please contact them directly if you would like to go horse riding.

Romsey Show, Romsey - fantastic local country show.  lots to see and do.  Held in September (please check site for dates, times and information).  Dogs welcome.

New Forest Show - famous country show held in July (please check site for dates, times and information).
