Welcome to The Old Barns in the stunning Test Valley, Hampshire

Corona Virus/Covid-19 Update - 24/06/2020

It is with deep sadness that we have made the difficult decision that we will not be re-opening our doors to holiday guests at The Old Barns Holiday Accommodation (cottages 1 – 4).

The business has been uneconomical for some time due to the massive increase in new tourist accommodation in the area and the huge rise in popularity of Airbnb.  When the pandemic hit, we were forced to make some very difficult decisions.

We refunded all our 2020 bookings in full.  Both of us fell though the gaps of the government financial support, so have been forced to make some major changes.

We have now successfully rented 3 out of 4 of our cottages on AST rentals.  The 4th cottage is now also being advertised as an AST rental.

We are still to complete the annexe unit, due to be completed by October 2020 and will look to start re-advertising once we have worked out the viability and completed the risk assessment.  The new normal will be vastly different going forward.  We will no longer be able to offer short stays and we will no longer be accepting pets.  We plan to minimise the risk by following the advice of leaving 72 hours before entering the property when guests depart.

Although the government has lifted restrictions and holiday accommodation can reopen from Saturday 4th July, owners will still be expected to refund any guests that cannot travel due to the pandemic.  Owners have affectively been forced to take the place of travel insurance, which unfortunately make the business uneconomical.  Owners also have to deal with the very real possibility of a guest contracting Covid-19 and having to isolate at the holiday accommodation, leaving the question of who pays, can the local hospitals/services cope, refunding and cancelling guests booked during this period and having to risk themselves or their cleaners following the guests departure.

We have put our blood, sweat and tears into this business and will be sad not seeing our regular guests, but circumstances change, and we have had to change with them.  It is the end of an era, but we have happy memories to look back on.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our past guests and hope you made some very happy memories at The Old Barns.

There are many holiday accommodation owners struggling and many that like us will not survive this pandemic as they are in similar situations.  Please be patient and kind, please be considerate at the changes they are forced to make, please support the individuals and not the huge companies, please book direct instead of lining the pockets of companies that exist off the back of hard working individuals, but most of all Stay Safe and remember just because lockdown is being lifted it doesn’t mean the virus has gone away.

Corona Virus/Covid-19

It is with great sadness that we write this post, this unprecedented situation surrounding the new Corona Virus/Covid-19 has rapidly unravelled and we have had to think long and hard about the very serious implications for all of us and potentially the future of our business.

We have been closely following the government advice and given the recent guidance of ‘no unnecessary travel’ and arguably holidays do not constitute necessary travel, we feel that the time has come to think about closing the business. We had initially thought of closing for 1 month, but travel restrictions and social distancing are now looking like they will continue for the foreseeable.

We must consider the safety of all involved, our guests, our family and our cleaners. We are concerned that if we do stay open we could inadvertently contribute to the spread of the virus with peoples movements.

Following government advice we are not taking any new bookings until the situation changes and all bookings for the next 3 months are being cancelled and fully refunded. This obviously has a huge financial impact on the future of our business.

We have closed all calendars and will re-open as and when the situation changes.

We would like to extend our thanks to our followers and our guests for your support and we hope that this situation is over soon. Stay safe and we wish you all the best.
